Billy

Floyd sets a beer down on the bar mat in front of me and slides onto the stool next to mine.

“You wanna tell me what’s up, little bro?”

“Nothing’s up.”

He raises one bushy eyebrow. “You’ve been staring at that bar mat for the last twenty minutes.”

I shrug. “It’s an interesting pattern.”

He snorts. “And I ate a whole plate of chicken wings in front of you, and you didn’t even take one.” He looks at me triumphantly. “So don’t tell me nothing’s up.”

I take a long swig of beer. I’m not usually one to talk about my problems, but my big brother has a way of getting things out of me.

“It’s a girl,” I say.

He nods. “It always is. Who is she?”

I tell him all about Harriet--how we met, the perfect date, holding hands under the stars, and then what I overheard today.

“I thought she was the one, but it turns out she was just getting out of her tow fees.”

He takes a long drink of beer. “She drives a BMW Z4 convertible and works in a fancy office...”

“I know what you’re going to say,” I cut him off. “I know how it seems. What does a girl like that want to hang around with someone like me for?”

The crease on his brow deepens, but I run on before he can say anything.

“But she didn’t seem snobby. She was down to earth and fun. She had a great laugh on her...”

He’s shaking his head like a wise old sage, even though he’s only two years older than me and still single.

“It doesn’t matter, little brother. I’ve seen girls like her before. You may have had a connection. Hell, she may even like you. But she’s looking for a rich guy. Someone who will keep her in fancy cars and nice clothes.”

“She’s not like that. I’m sure of it.”

He raises his eyebrows at me. “You sure about that? You met her, what? Two days ago? How do you know what she’s really like?”

I take another swig of beer. I was so sure we had something special. From the moment I laid eyes on her I wanted her, and the night by the lake confirmed it for me. I’ve never felt like that about anyone, and I’m sure she felt it to.

But maybe he’s right. Maybe she’d prefer a rich guy who wears a suit and takes her to five star restaurants instead of on picnics.

Floyd lays a thick hand on my shoulder. “I’m sorry, little brother, but if she can’t appreciate you for who you are, if she’d rather be chasing the money, then she’s not worth it.”

“I thought she was different.” I hang my head, feeling miserable. I must be bad company tonight, but Floyd’s doing his best to cheer me up.

He takes his hand off my shoulder and wafts it in front of his face.

“Phew, what is that aftershave you’re wearing?”

“It’s my beard oil.”

“Beard oil.” He chuckles at me. “Dude, were you wearing that on the date? Because maybe that’s your problem right there.
